When people with disabilities retire from their working lives in sheltered workshops, their daily routines change fundamentally. Familiar structures disappear, and finding a new sense of purpose and community becomes essential.
The AWO Vicus Treff in Gevelsberg supports this transition with activities that structure the day, strengthen the sense of community and help establish new routines. Creative activities such as art and music play a central role in this.
The “Biography in Colour” project focused on personal childhood memories. Participants brought along old photographs and shared the stories behind them. These memories gave rise to large-scale works: the photos were reinterpreted through painting and rendered in vibrant colours – the past was given a new lustre.
The project creates space for self-determination and visibility. The works demonstrate how unique every life story is.
