Rineke Dijkstra's haunting pictures of young adolescents push the boundaries of the classical portrait. Her works are touching portraits of young people caught between childlike insecurity, self-control and the pursuit of perfection. In the video work “The Gymschool, St. Petersburg”, the girls impressively demonstrate the malleability of the human body and at the same time manifest characteristics of the sculptural. One of the most renowned artists of the Netherlands, Rineke Dijkstra has been internationally recognised since the 1990s.
