Takako Saito (b. 1929 in Sabae-shi) utilises simple materials such as paper, wood, and all manner of found objects to articulate her wondrous and seemingly endless wealth of ideas. Central to the work of this highly prolific Fluxus artist are play, conviviality and her curiosity about material and interpersonal processes (the encounter between artist and audience or between flat iron and paper). „No matter what you throw in here, it will be a portrait of Takako“ is written on the large clay pots that are casually placed in the doorway of her Düsseldorf studio. The principle of her work is simple, do it yourself or better do it together.
The multi-faceted solo exhibition at the Kunstmuseum is a tribute to and made in conversation with this exceptional artist, whose humor, ideas and incredible craftsmanship persist even in her later years. Performance dresses, drawings, films, sculptures, sound installations and live performances can be experienced throughout the first floor of the Kunstmuseum.
