The € 10,000 art prize »junger westen«, announced in 2021 for graphics, drawing and photography, will be awarded to the South Korean-German artist Jeewi Lee (* 1987, Seoul) from Berlin. The jury selected a total of 16 artists who will take part in the exhibition: Ann-Josephin Dietz (Stuttgart), Rahel Goetsch (Frankfurt am Main), Jonas Habrich (Cologne), Damaris Kerkhoff (Cologne), Jeewi Lee (Berlin) , Donja Nasseri (Düsseldorf), Nico Pachali (Hanover), Mari Lena Rapprich (Bremen), Morgaine Schäfer (Düsseldorf), Cordula Schieri (Munich), Berit Schneidereit (Düsseldorf), Isabell Schulte (Berlin), Yui Tombana (Münster), Yoana Tuzharova (Cologne), Vladimir Unkovic (Essen) and Philipp Valenta (Hildesheim).

The “junger westen” art award is the first prize for the fine arts that a German municipality awarded after 1945. Endowed with 10,000 euros, it is awarded every two years as a sponsorship prize for the fine arts of the city of Recklinghausen with the support of the Kulturstiftung der Sparkasse Recklinghausen.

This year 483 artists applied. Participants were born in 1986 or later; a requirement was also a residence in the Federal Republic of Germany or German citizenship.
