Gormley/Lehmbruck: Calling on the Body

Lehmbruck Museum, Duisburg

From autumn 2022, the Lehmbruck Museum will present an extensive exhibition of works by Antony Gormley (*1950), one of the pioneers of British sculpture in the 21st century. Gormley has consistently focussed on the human body in his work, creating poignant manifestations of the contemporary human condition. His work makes us turn our focus inwards while showing a deep affinity with the work of Wilhelm Lehmbruck, created almost a century earlier.

The large-scale monographic show will present works from the 1980s to the present day which offer an insight into the artist’s impressive oeuvre. The exhibition will be unique in featuring interventions scattered across the entire museum, where Gormley’s silent sculptures will enter into an affective artistic dialogue with Lehmbruck’s sculptures and the architecture of the Lehmbruck Museum.

The exhibition is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Rhineland Regional Council (LVR), the Kulturstiftung der Länder, the Sparkasse Duisburg, the Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Rheinland and duisport – Duisburger Hafen AG.
